Ahiahi mārie,
We are writing to let you know that unfortunately, this newsletter will be shutting down for the foreseeable future. The last edition will be sent on Thursday, November 28.
Like many other media companies in New Zealand, The Spinoff has experienced a significant decline in commercial revenue in the last few months. Despite multiple attempts, we have not found a long-term commercial partner for The Boil Up. We tried continuing it on a fortnightly basis instead of weekly, and unfortunately, that has also proven unsustainable.
As a result of the very challenging financial situation we find ourselves in, we have had to freeze all external editorial commissioning, and unfortunately, this includes this newsletter and our climate change newsletter, Future Proof.
On Thursday this week, we will be emailing you with more information about our current situation and how we hope to address our challenges.
Since May 2022, we have been proud to bring you this uniquely flavoured kai newsletter, focusing on the meaning of food in our lives. Lucinda Bennett has been the editor since January 2024, and we want you to know this decision is in no way a reflection of her work. Nor is it a reflection of how valued The Boil Up’s subscribers are by us. The Spinoff also remains committed to writing about food onsite, particularly on its intersection with almost every other aspect of our lives in Aotearoa.
You will be the first to know if we can bring this newsletter back in the future.
In the meantime, thank you very much for subscribing, and thank you to Lucinda for doing such a great job at the helm as editor.
If you have any questions or feedback, you can email info@thespinoff.co.nz.

Sad to hear this, team! The Boil Up is the kind of niche cultural content that I love about The Spinoff and it's gutting that you're not able to keep it going. We're all gonna keep eating yum stuff until the Boil Up comes back. Thanks to all the contributors for such good work.
I’m so sad to hear about this and future proof; two of my favourite newsletters. :(
